Remixing AGE OLD cinematics techniques… …for making films, VERYYYYY CHEAP, n more creative freedom.

I have an idea!.

reusing or re-purposeing, the technique of REAR PROJECTION, as used in the past, for CAR (int.)

THE ONE LINER IS – HOW TO MAKE SETS-REAL LOCATIONS, FOR A PRICE OF A PHOTOGRAPH(s),

n can carry ur LOCATIONS on a DATA STICK,..

Now, the  idea for new uses…

for a location – INTERIORS ONLY, that is required for a scene, say a small room in a Chawl, or a slum (OPEN WINDOWS AVOID- a tricky – but- can be done)

Take a VERY wide Panorama at least a 180 degree sweep Horizontally (prefer 360). just till the ground/floor level. ( w/ DSLR n QTVR, it’s very easy to produce, the best quality ie cutting edge stuff, read ILM-G. Lucas)

here is an example of a QTVR FILE… u will need QUICK TIME on a PC ( n Mac plays by default

1. a STICHED PANORAMA 360 degree Horizontal (PAN)

2. This is a QTVR .mov will open in quick time or any web browser as long as it has a QT plug-in, most-likely it will.

This is just a 360 degree horizontal only, one can also do 360 degree vertically, ie TILT, TOP/sky/roof/Floor/ground.

IT looks like a simple still RIGHT ? now,

drag ur cursor/mouse pointer (press the Left Button) n voila u cam pan in which ever way u want.

N NOW THE BIGGGG THING,

PRESS THE SHIFT KEY n IT WILL ZOOM IN, n PRESS THE CONTROL KEY n it will ZOOM OUT,

u can do both PANNING N ZOOM AT THE SAME TIME!!!

2. Now BACK to STUDIO.

Erect 3 sides FLATS (SCREENS) like three wall.

.             The Screen has too be the  Exact size of the walls of the ACTUAL Location(photographed).

this wud be important, so even camera-motion, is seeamlessly matching the B/G (projections)

  • n using three VIDEO PROJECTORS, project the PANORAMIC image u have taken of the location, on the three screens.
  • (alternately  – The shooting camera n the projector will have to be CRYSTAL-Synced, else there might be some BANDING, n artifacts, also one will have to use Progressive n not inter-laced mode. optionally one can use, old style SLIDE PROJECTORS as the are FULL FRAME (PROGRESSIVE) n there a not fields,  or flicker than can happen, but this eliminates the possibility of using motion in the B/G ( Screen)

the MAGNIFICATION/ZOOM/angle has to be 1:1 on Projection.

i.e. if there is a 1ft scale on a rack on the wall, it shud be exactly 1ft when projected on the screens.

(This is the most important, to get a perfect match, even where actors/foreground movement happens)

Note. the 3 Flats shud BE ROUNDED, seamless, no edges, b’cause,

….(TMI: cause the EDGES of the WALLS will be the LINE OF MERGING the 3 projectors, can using KEYSTONE manupulation to give a NEAR PERFECT EDGE to the camera, n AVOIDs any motion TRACKING in POST, Keystone ERROR is like the ADS تu see on the Cricket grounds, where the LOGO looks CORRECT, straight to the camera, when seen, OTS. of the BOWLER, but when u see another camera angle of say a fielder walking over the LOGO, it looks TAPPERED ie. slanting, wider lower part n narrower top part, THIS IS THE WAY THE LOGO IS PAINTING ON THE GROUND, n u see the EFFECT WORK!!! got it? noo? OK. never mind the tech …. ;-]

To make the SET complete n REAL,

u will HAVE TO MAKE THE FLOOR, as real as possible,

POP, plaster, wood, paint whatever, like old MASK PAINTERS. or still a LARGE sheet of VINLY, with the floor texture u want,

also to enrich/make it error FREE, put some props on the floor, n maybe some thing on the Screens as well, (this will need some fine thiinking… ie. planning. )

This far better than Chroma/green screen, n no motion tracking, or ney EXTRA POST CGI.

  • I’m going to do a trial for this to, check how to get the exposure to match the floor/actors, n the rear projection.

SURE we will need tons of cutters n barn doors.

but the new LED. lights a very direction-control able, n dont SPREAD too much even when SOFT.

Next wud be replace the Flats or screens with VERY large say 20×15 feet wide LED displays,

with this the added benift wud be u can enhanse the rear screen, n if need be one can use DIFFERENCE MATT ( like the Kylie Minogue video),

n if one can aford it use Motion control camera mounts, so the ease of making changes, n being able to use dynamic background, n motion in the B/G, (i.e. view from a window, ( u can chroma n motion track it as well like the moving paintings in Harry Pottter films.

But with this tech, u eliminate the need for elaborate SFX team n post time n money.

USES….

  1. Being able to film in location where it is not possible to shoot a Film.
  2. Excellent solution for minimising OUTDOOR, location, ( for lo-no Budget films), no hassles of permission, crowd etc.
  3. able to show element of time-lapse by just re-touching the PHOTOGRAPHS of the REAL LOCATION, ( say a switch-board, over a period of looks DISTRESSED/old/used). Ideal for ADs.
  4. Can do PRODUCT-PLACEMENT ie. in FILM marketing, After the film is shot, n the advertiser get to choose what/where/how wud the want to be PLACED. This is a more liberating way, creatively as one is not BOUND to say/show/use PRODUCTS, n r free to make the FILM, without being confined to some – actions/activities…
  5. TOTALLY ECO FRIENDLY ;-]
LIMITATIONs-
  1. a complete 360 degree shot, wud be very challenging, not IMPOSSIBLE.
  2. need more effort if the Roof/ceiling is in the frame, it can be done, but the best way to light the foreGround/actors wud be from the Top/TARAFA/CATWALK.
  3. there will have to be a minimum distance the actor has to maintain from the screen, cause of light FALL OFF. (well can be used n an eye candy effect but wud not work as REAL, or will have to Colour correct – masking -rotoscoping et al.)

This is just the thought, n a lil simple explanation for ppl who are in Film-making.
